GEORGE TOWN - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has become the first public university in Malaysia that is able to provide a Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) facility for any registered candidates from anywhere in the world, following the launch of its Computer Based Test Centre, known as CBT@USM Centre.
Vice-chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan said the CBT@USM Centre, in collaboration with USAINS Holding Sdn Bhd, has received the accreditation to administer the TOEFL iBT Test by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the United States.
"We are confident that this centre will be able to provide the best in class test environment for candidates, especially for those coming from the northern region of Malaysia.
"This accreditation by ETS proves that both the USM computer lab and the staff manning the lab are of global standards and compliance," he told reporters at the launch here today.
He is also confident that this international achievement would further aid USM's quest to attract many more international students. USM currently has over 6,000 international students.
CBT@USM Project Leader, Assoc. Professor Dr Shaik Abdul Malik Mohamed Ismail said this milestone is only the first step for the centre as it already has plans to conduct other world-class ETS test products such as Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), TOEIC Bridge, TOEFL - Institutional Testing Programme (ITP), TOEFL Junior and TOEFL Primary tests.
"Professionals, managers and entry-level workers from multinational companies can benefit from taking the TOEIC test as it will add value to their resume and enhance their language skills in tandem with industrial needs.
"This test is already taken by professionals in Japan, South Korea and the Philippines. However, it is still at an early stage in Malaysia," he added. - BERNAMA
