KUALA LUMPUR - World-renowned Islamic scholar Yusuf al-Qaradawi has died today at the age of 96.

The news was announced through his official social meda account.

However, there were no further details shared by the admin of the account regarding the passing of the head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS)

Born on Sept 9, 1926, Al-Qadrawi was known as a Mujtahid in the modern era.

He was reported to have died in Qatar, where he lived in exile following the military overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood-led government in Egypt in 2013.

Al-Qadrawi had been on trial and sentenced to death in absentia in Egypt.

Throughout his life, he produced more than 120 books including manuscripts of Islamic law and received various international recognitions.

He was famous through the "Sharia and Life" programme produced by international news channel Al-Jazeera, which was estimated to have been viewed 40 to 60 million people worldwide.
