SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian tax system is one sided system, favouring the rich, said economist Professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram, adding that the government was not taxing the rich more.
"Instead other taxes involving daily items and needs and income tax rates were supposedly reduced to compete with international levels.
"This situation was influenced by western countries especially the United Kingdom (UK)y," he said at the 365th edition of Wacana Sinar programme to talk on budget 2023.
Citing example, he said British ex-prime minister Margaret Thatcher, US ex-president Ronald Reagan and recently US-ex-president Donald Trump's administration also reduced taxes for the rich.
Other panelists present were Damansara MP Tony Pua and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Political Economy and International Studies Policy Analyst Dr Md Shukri Shuib while Ismail Adnan acted as the moderator.
