BANGI - The government is looking into the feasibility of implementing the concept of ‘diyat’, or financial compensation to the kin of victims, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Idris Ahmad.

He said engagement sessions were being held to gauge if it could be implemented within the existing legal framework or if a new law is needed for this purpose.

"So far, we just had the first roundtable (discussion). We need more time to look into this matter from the legal aspect,” he told a press conference after officiating at the national-level Convention of Syarie Enforcement Officers and Prosecutors here today.

Yesterday, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah expressed hope that the concept of diyat that he had proposed over the past few years can be studied and implemented in Pahang, and the country in general.

Earlier, Idris launched the standard operating procedures (SOP) for escorting arrested persons to courts and places of detention which will be used by Islamic religious enforcement officers in the Federal Territories.

He said the SOP would be brought for consideration by religious enforcement authorities at the state level so that it can also be implemented nationwide.

"At the same time, I also believe that religious enforcement officers, including those tasked with accompanying detainees to courts or places of detention, should have an image or identity that shows that they are enforcement officers,” he said.

As such, he hoped that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) could prepare a guideline for the use of uniforms by religious enforcement authorities and proposed that it be funded by the respective State Islamic Religious Councils. - BERNAMA
