NEW DELHI - The Indian government has sacked three military officers over the missile misfire into Pakistan in March.

Their services have been terminated with immediate effect, the Indian Air Force said.

An inquiry found that "deviation from the standard operating procedures by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile," it said in a statement on Tuesday.

The BrahMos cruise missile, a weapon system jointly developed by Russia and India, crashed near the city of Mian Channu in Punjab province on March 9.

No deaths or injuries were reported in the incident that was blamed on "a technical malfunction" by the Indian Defence Ministry at that time.

Pakistan had strongly protested against what it described as "the unprovoked violation" of its airspace. - BERNAMA
