SHAH ALAM - In a bid to protect the people's money, PKR plans to wage a 'jihad' against online scammers.
Party information chief, Fahmi Fadzil, announced that PKR's fight against virtual theft will be spearheaded by a soon-to-be revealed executive committee in charge of tackling the issue.
"This executive committee will help the victims with the legal measures and also reformation on certain institutions to make sure we will win against scammers.
"This needs to be done as millions of rakyat's money is at stake at this moment," said Fahmi at a press conference at PKR headquarters today.
Fahmi also said there were 20,000 victims of online scam from 2017 until 2021, with an estimate of RM660 million stolen.
From Jan until July 2022, it was estimated that 13,000 people were scammed; losing more than RM427 million.
"One of the victim at today's press conference with us, had lost his i-Lestari money amounting RM8,680 last April. This is a huge disaster for the people.
"What’s worrying is that there seems to be zero effort from the government in tackling the issue.
"We want the real mastermind to be arrested, not the small one and the Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia and Bank Negara Malaysia should do something,” he added.
