IPOH - An Ipoh man and wife suspected of being involved in drug trafficking activities in the state were detained in an operation on Thursday for processing 20.7 kg drugs.
The local 34-year-old man and his Vietnamese wife aged 38 were arrested by a team of officers and Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department personnel from Perak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) around 4.40pm.
Perak Police Chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the couple was found with 20 Chinese tea packages suspected to contain methamphetamine drugs weighing around 20.7 kilograms for over 200,000 drug addicts.
He said the couple was arrested near a food court car park around Jalan Raja Musa Mahadi while his wife was arrested on the side of the road near Panorama Lapangan Perdana.
Initial investigations show that the man had 10 plastic packages suspected of containing drugs at his home.
More packets were subsequent;y found an an apartment in Ipoh, "he said in the press conference in Perak Police headquarters today.
He said urine samples from the man showed signs of methamphetamine drugs while his wife was negative of drugs.
He said a background check showed the man had no prior offences.
"The couple have been married for about 3 to 4 years," he said, adding that the couple are now remanded for seven days starting Friday under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 and will be sentenced to death by hanging if found guilty.
In the statement, the police had also confiscated a Rolex watch, ankle bracelets, rings and bracelets estimated to be worth RM83,000.
