JOHOR BAHRU - Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Deputy President Rafizi Ramli claims that Datuk Seri Najib Razak will only be 'safe' from his prison sentence if Umno wins big in the upcoming 15th General Elections (GE15).
He claimed that many people in Umno knew about the situation and the former premier’s status now only depended on Umno’s popularity and Barisan Nasional (BN) to save himself.
"A large number of Umno members including higher position leaders knew that the Pekan MP is guilty especially involving the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal and others.
"Najib is not actually as popular among Umno members, only he thinks that he is.
"Najib would only receive support if Umno wins big, if they win by a small number, then he is in trouble. If Umno loses, he will become the 'class monitor' in Sungai Buloh (Sungai Buloh Prison)," he said.
Rafizi said this when he gave a speech at the 'Fundraising Dinner' council attended by over 800 members and supporters of the party in Taman Johor Jaya here yesterday.
Also present were Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh who is also the Johor PKR Chairman, Johor Bahru MP Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim.
Rafizi said the opposition, mainly PKR would continuously use the 1MDB scandal involving Najib even though he was no longer the number one leader in the country.
"There are people in Umno, MIC and MCA who said why are we still 'touching' on the issue of Najib since he is no longer the Prime Minister, however I will not stop until I die because he left debts that might not be paid for after three or four generations," he said.
He said the 1MDB debt has only been paid RM13 billion out of the RM53 billion owed meanwhile, the money collected from the scandal case was only as much as RM20 billion.
"This would mean that Malaysians have to bear the 1MDB debt of RM20 billion," he said.
