Microsoft Corp has officially shut down its oldest browser, Internet Explorer, 27 years after its launch on Aug 24, 1995.

The application joins BlackBerry phones, Palm Pilots and dial-up modems in the dustbin of tech history.

From June 15 onwards the desktop application is replaced with the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft’s decision to retire the classic web browser came as no surprise as the announcement was made a year ago.

In a blog post dated May 2021 by the general manager of Microsoft Edge Enterprise, Sean Lyndersay, he wrote: "Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications.”

Internet Explorer was the ultimate Internet gateway for those born before Generation Z, years before Google, Facebook and TikTok joined the scene.
