Since its release in 1994, the song "All I Want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey has become the ultimate Christmas anthem, topping the charts of every Christmas holiday season.
Now, after nearly three decades since the song was aired, Carey is being sued for $20 million over alleged copyright infringement, misappropriation, among other claims.
The lawsuit was brought by songwriter Andy Stone, who claims he co-wrote a song with the same name and did not give permission for it to be used.
News reports stated that the two songs have different lyrics and different melodies.
It was said that Stone’s version had received "extensive airplay” during the 1993 Christmas season and began making appearance on the Billboard Music Charts.
The filing claims that Carey, her co-writer Walter Afanasieff, and Sony music group never sought or obtained permission for the use of the title.
The song, has been streamed at least 1 billion times on Spotify, and has reportedly earned the singer more than $60 million in royalties.
The hit tune was part of Carey’s "Merry Christmas” album, which was released on Nov 1, 1994, selling more than 159 million copies worldwide.
