SHAH ALAM - The government will table the anti-hoping law in the Dewan Rakyat sitting to be held this July.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, however, said this depends on the parliamentary select committee that will be formed to examine this Act.
According to him, the parliamentary special select committee will comprise of government representatives, opposition lawmakers and constitutional experts.
"This depends on the special select committee and how fast they present the Act to be tabled to the Cabinet for approval,'' he said.
After gaining the Cabinet's approval, the anti-hopping law can then be presented to the Dewan Rakyat immediately, said Ismail Sabri.
"The government have no intention to delay or not table the anti-hopping law.
"This is because there are parties who are confused and playing up the narrative that the government is not serious in tabling the Act,'' he said.
Ismail Sabri also hopes the amendment to Article 10 of the Constitution will be supported by more than 148 lawmakers.
"I hope it is approved with more than 148 votes as constitutional amendments require a 2/3 majority support.
"To date, from all the media statements that we read, all government parties support the amendment. Pakatan Harapan also declared their support for the amendment when they met me.
"So there is no issue that the amendment will not be passed. I hope what is promised will be fulfilled tomorrow (April 11).
The Federal Constitution (Amendments) 2022 Bill on Anti-Party Hopping and Limiting the Tenure of the Prime Minister aims to prevent party hopping among elected lawmakers and limit the term of the prime minister.
