SHAH ALAM - Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has cautioned over families being trapped into housing multi-generational loans, saying this is wrong as housing is a basic "human right".
Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) Youth Chief Arveent Kathirtchelvan said Malaysians pay a huge chunk of their pay for housing.
"Malaysians of the median income are forced to take huge loans but housing is a human right," he said.
He was speaking during a Wacana with Sinar Daily titled Dear Youth Leaders, What's Next.
He said if the government accepts it as a basic human right, "then we see a lot of schemes coming that will ensure everyone has one just like water supply as one."
He suggested for a first housing scheme to be launched for first-time house buyers.
It can be initiated by the government to provide affordable housing at the proper locations with adequate public transportation and other basic necessities that are "sold at a much lower price because it is a government scheme and they cannot charge for land."
He added the government could also offer a "council housing" scheme for the bottom 20 category if the present public housing is inadequate.
