KUALA LUMPUR - Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Idris Ahmad has expressed concern over a clip containing "steamy scenes” uploaded by popular actor Zul Ariffin from his upcoming drama titled 'Perempuan Itu’.
While not referring directly to the teaser, Idris in a Facebook post today said he felt the need to offer advice, especially when the show was slated to be released during Ramadhan, a spiritual month for Muslims.
He said Islam does not prohibit entertainment, but there is a strict sense of discipline especially when it involves immoral scenes.
"I am not trying to stop the entertainment industry in Malaysia, but if it tarnishes the image of the religion, I could not let it happen without offering advice,” he wrote.
He added that he would get in touch with those involved to seek advice so that the matter could be prevented.
Idris also called on all Muslims to prepare for the upcoming Ramadhan.
The clip which sparked controversy and went viral on social media has drawn the ire of netizens who described it as "disgusting” and "too steamy”.
Some were even calling for Erma Fatima, the director of the drama, to be ‘cancelled’.
There were all sorts of comments regarding the video as some believed that the film was unsuitable, especially among Muslims, during Ramadan, while some said people needed to keep an open mind because it portrayed real-life.
Twitter user @skintymia commented "Even parts in the lyrics of English songs which contained names of alcohol beverages are censored and the word ‘bodoh’ (stupid) in films will be bleeped. But soft porn like this is permitted to be aired. Crazy”.
@H_Bakkaniy said "The element of obscenity in the drama that will be shown is really disgusting @tv3malaysia, and it is said to contain ‘valuable lessons’? Remember Allah. Do not encourage pornography culture, especially in Ramadhan!!!!”.
Meanwhile, @dk_derick72 said "There’s a real world, with real people, outside the hypocritical minds of a few.”
Following the backlash, Zul Ariffin removed the video from his Instagram account.
