JOHOR BAHRU - Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi hopes that the mandatory mask order could be lifted soon as to allow Malaysians to return to a sense of near normal.
Taking Germany as an example, Zahid stated that he is perplexed that the European nation does not require its citizen to wear masks in public, only in enclosed spaces, but Malaysians are required to do the opposite.
"In Germany, they are allowed not to wear their mask in open public spaces, only indoors but here in Malaysia, it's the opposite.
"Why do you need to wear a mask outdoors? you would only be inhaling your own breath,'' he said in jest to a laughing crowd of some 50 people during a ceramah in Larkin, here today.
"So I hope our Health Minister, Khairy would be able to go overseas and see how it is done,’’ said Zahid in a witty remark, referring to Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
Speaking in jest, the Umno president also ask the crowd whether they support his notion that mandatory mask order should be lifted, and those who raised their hands would also support BN in the polls this March 12.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced that the nation will move into the endemic phase beginning April 1.
This includes lifting several restrictions including social distancing order in places of worship and business are allowed to operate 24 hours or according to stipulated business hours in accordance with their license.
National borders will also be opened, allowing for Malaysians or would-be travellers to enter the country.
