SHAH ALAM – Former researcher at the Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism Lalitha Kunaratnam has filed her defence statement in the defamation suit filed by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
Lalita told Sinar Daily that the statement had been filed by her lawyer Ibrahim & Fuaadah at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.
On Jan 12, Azam had filed a defamation suit against Lalitha demanding RM10 million in damages and a public apology for two articles she wrote about him last year.
Azam’s lawyer Megat Abdul Munir in a press statement said the suit was made after the letter of demand was issued on Jan 6 did not receive any response from her.
Azam, as the plaintiff, also demanded a court order for Lalitha to delete articles and statements on the matter within three days from the date of judgment as well as a public apology.
Megat stressed that the article's titles, of one included ‘Business Ties Among MACC Leadership: How Deep Does It Go?’, was sensational, scandalous, disturbing, and disgusting.
Case management has been fixed on Feb 15 before High Court senior assistant registrar Noordura Mohamed Din.
