Match Group sues Muzmatch for trademark infringement

Match Group, the owner of Match.com, Tinder and Hinge has filed a lawsuit against a Muslim dating app called Muzmatch due to ‘copying’ allegations on the company.

The company accused Muzmatch of trademark infringement for the use of the word ‘match’ in its name.

A two-day hearing took place recently, which saw Younas spend a total of three hours on the stand, answering questions about Muzmatch.

Company emails, internal reports and earlier versions of Muzmatch in 2014 was also presented.

With the slogan of "Where single Muslims meet”, Muzmatch's prime mission is to find marriage partners for Muslims around the world as Muslims are prohibited to date, and most Muslims intended to marry.

The founder of the UK-based Muslim dating app, Shahzad Younaz who established the brand since 2011 said Muzmatch does not serve the same market as they do as Muzmatch prioritize Muslims in finding love meanwhile, Match Group focuses on people finding love in general.

Match Group claimed that Muzmatch’s keyword tags that include match-muslim and UK-muslim-match are an attempt to ride on the coattails of its registered marks.

The growing Muslim focused app that now has over 4 million users on the countries namely in UK, USA, France, Malaysia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Germany, stood its grounds, saying the brand’s name is a play on the muz for Muslim and match for matchmaking.
